Rhys Calland has retained his men's open title at the 2026 WHEA World Championships in Canada, adding another major result to a strong 2026 season.

The championship also produced several strong performances from military athletes, including Paige Attwell winning the women's under-75 kg division on an all-Army podium.

Calland Retains the Men's Open Title

According to Forces News, Corporal Rhys Calland successfully defended his men's open world title at the WHEA championships. The result continues an impressive year for Calland, who is also Europe's Strongest Man and has been nominated for Army Sportsman of the Year.

The result is another reminder of the depth of strength sport beyond the better-known commercial competitions on the calendar.

An All-Army Women's Podium

Paige Attwell won the women's under-75 kg title, with Simone Pipe taking second and Joanna Bastian third. The all-Army podium highlighted the growing range of athletes competing successfully in strength events.

Other military athletes also reached the podium across the men's under-100 kg and masters categories.

What Strongman Results Mean for Regular Lifters

You do not need to train like a professional strongman to borrow useful ideas from the sport. Heavy compound lifts, carries, bracing, grip work and progressive loading can all have a place in a well-designed strength program.

The important distinction is that competitive strongman is a specialized sport. Events, implements, maximal attempts and contest preparation are not automatically appropriate for a recreational lifter.

October Is Getting Busy for Strength Sports

The result arrives during a packed October strength calendar. Powerlifting meets are taking place across Canada and the United States, while the Rogue Invitational is approaching later this month.

That makes this a particularly active period for readers who follow bodybuilding, powerlifting and strongman alongside their own training.

The Gym Log Takeaway

Calland's title defense is the headline, but the bigger story is the continued growth and variety of strength sports. Follow the competitions for inspiration, but keep your own training focused on a repeatable program, sensible progression and consistent tracking.
